Engineers who build physical things lead the rise in job postings

US job postings for mechanical engineers are up 44% on a year ago, industrial engineering 40% and electrical engineering 34%. In Canada, civil (+39%), electrical (+34%) and mechanical engineering (+26%) are among the five fastest risers. New plants, grid upgrades and data-centre construction are pulling on people who design and run physical systems. That is interpretation, not something the data proves. US software postings rose 24% but remain about 18% below February 2020.

"Prompt engineer is tech's hottest new job": contradicted

Of 28,843 open US and Canada roles on the 644 company job boards we track, none is titled prompt engineer and only 6 mention "prompt" in the title. 189 are for agent and LLM engineers. AI work is spreading into existing jobs, not into a new title.

Two in three live roles on tech-heavy job boards mention AI

19,500 of 28,843 distinct roles mention AI or machine learning. The count runs broad because any mention qualifies, and the boards lean toward startups. The direction is the signal: AI is becoming part of the job description, not a separate job.
